LGBTQ+ Pride: Celebrating the History That Inspired Change

Throughout June, LGBTQ+ team members are celebrating Pride Month, just as many friends and families work to become more meaningful allies. One way for us all to honor this month is by learning about the history and experiences of the LGBTQ+ equality movement. To get started, below are a few resources – both enlightening and entertaining – that highlight LGBTQ+ history, pioneers, and events that inspired a movement to drive change. 

EXPLORING LGBTQ+ HISTORY

Explore how Pride Month started as well as key moments in the gay rights movement.  

  • PRIDE MONTH: USA Today explains the origins of Pride Month, the different Pride flags, and ways to celebrate Pride Month, including visiting these sites where LGBTQ+ history was made. Read the full article → 
  • GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT: The History Channel talks about the progress that has been made as well as the work that still needs to be done in the gay rights movement. Read the full article → 
  • LGBTQ+ POP CULTURE MILESTONES: The TODAY Show shares 50 LGBTQ+ milestones in pop culture history ranging from the first gay character on TV in 1972 to “The L Word” in 2004, TV’s first drama centered on lesbian characters. Read the full article →
