NVA and PrideVMC: Partnering to Empower LGBTQ+ Caregivers

by Danielle DeLapp, CVPM

SENIOR RECRUITING PROGRAMS SPECIALIST

Earlier this year, NVA partnered with the Pride Veterinary Medical Community (PrideVMC) to further the personal and professional growth and development of LGBTQIA+ veterinarians and animal care professionals. As a Gold-level sponsor, we’ve made a significant investment to make more resources and networking opportunities available to our community and industry.

PrideVMC has 40+ years of history advocating and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Their organization took root during the gay liberation events following Stonewall in the late 1970s. Today, PrideVMC promotes acceptance and inclusivity through community development, professional advocacy, and individual empowerment. They also curate a wealth of resources and content that includes DEI education, grant applications, LGBTQ+ terminology, and more.

In February, CEO Greg Hartmann shared his thoughts on the partnership: “NVA is proud to be home to veterinarians and animal care professionals of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences. We are deeply committed to creating a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and valued for their differences and contributions. Our partnership with PrideVMC underscores that commitment. Their important work to support and empower LGBTQ+ veterinary professionals and students lifts us all up and strengthens the larger community of animal care professionals.”

In honor of Pride month, our very own Senior Associate of Talent and Learning at NVA, Kristelle Beecher, recently connected with PrideVMC on a two-part blog series focused on building a culture centered on acceptance and openness. ”At NVA, we denounce hate crimes, discrimination, and aggression against any of our communities,” says Kristelle. “We come together to celebrate our people of diverse identities and backgrounds, and we will continue to work together to support all people.” You can read her blog posts here and here.

If you’re thinking about joining PrideVMC, membership is open to the veterinary and animal care community – and allies are welcome too! Membership includes:

  • Access to a directory of fellow members to connect and contact
  • Opportunities to serve on committees and working groups
  • Participation in professional networking at national conferences
  • Access to PrideVMC’s member-only Facebook group
  • An invitation to be recognized on PrideVMC’s social media channels

Learn more about PrideVMC’s membership here, and you can follow all of their efforts on their Instagram @pridevmc!
